The Relationship Between Preschool Students' Problem Behaviors and Parental Dyadic Adjustment: A Mixed Methods Study

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between preschool children's problem behaviors and parents' dyadic adjustment. Literature reviews show that correlational studies are common in this field, but qualitative and mixed studies remain limited. In the research designed with mixed method, 29 children between the ages of four and six attending a private independent kindergarten in the Ümraniye district of Istanbul and their mothers constituted the study group. In the study, quantitative data were collected using the Demographic Information Form, Problem Behavior Scale and Dyadic Adjustment Scale, and qualitative data were collected using a semi-structured interview form. The quantitative data of the study were analyzed with Pearson correlation analysis, and the qualitative data were analyzed with descriptive and content analysis methods. The quantitative and qualitative findings of the study revealed a relationship between children's problem behaviors and their parents' dyadic adjustment, and a negative relationship between parental dyadic adjustment scores and antisocial behavior scores in the antisocial sub-dimension of problem behavior. These results indicate that programs aimed at increasing parents' dyadic adjustment may be useful in supporting children's behavioral development and suggest that long-term studies with larger participation should be conducted.
